Sheltered in the Pindus Mountains in northwestern Greece, Vikos Gorge is one of the most breathtaking canyons in Europe. With a depth of about 1,000 meters (3,300 ft), it holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s deepest gorge relative to its width. Vikos Gorge is located in the mountainous Epirus region, which, despite its majestic landscapes and excellent hiking trails, has remained largely undiscovered by foreign travelers. Because of that, the area has a very authentic and off-the-beaten-path feel and you’ll get to enjoy it without the tourist crowds that strangle many other parts of Greece.

Vikos Gorge in Zagori is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Greece. The canyon consists of limestone and dolomite formations dating back 150 million years and vertical walls that extend to a height of 1700 meters.

Our 1-day Vikos Gorge hiking starts from the village of Monodendri with a 45-minute descent to the river. The trail is uphill and downhill and surrounded by steep mountain peaks and dense forests of deciduous trees and 1,800 species of plants. Before climbing to the village of Vikos, we will visit the springs of Voidomatis, the cleanest and coldest river in Greece, with an average annual temperature of 8.5°C. If you are brave, you might want to try the experience of a very refreshing dive in the crystal clear waters during the summer months. The hiking tour ends in the village of Vikos.
