Overview
In the region of Zagori and in the wider mountain of Tymfi, there are many routes on which one can walk according to one’s abilities. The dense network of paths that exists as well as the diversity of the landscape gives the hiker the opportunity to approach the nature of Zagori in a different way each time, offering him unique feelings of satisfaction and relaxation.
Someone can walk on ancient stone cobblestones and stone arched bridges, meet traditional stone-built villages, quench one’s thirst in springs with crystal clear water, see a wide variety of trees, shrubs and a wide variety of rare flowers and herbs. One can still climb high peaks while walking in alpine fields with rare geological formations thousands of years old. With a little luck, one can meet one of the rare wild animals of the area such as the brown bear, the wolf, the wild goat, the deer, the wild boar or even some large birds of prey such as the golden eagle, the bald eagle or the hawk.
Itinerary
Arrival in Monodendri Zagori. Visit to the monastery of Agia Paraskevi which was built in 1412 with a beautiful view towards the Vikos gorge. Overnight at a traditional guesthouse in Monodendri.
Distance: 15km – Duration: 6-7 hours
Circular hike where, starting from Monodendri, we head towards the village of Vitsa, then to the cobblestone stairs of Vitsa, the stone arched bridge of Misios in the Vikos gorge, Koukouli village, the single arched stone bridge of Kontodimos, Kipoi Village, the three-arched stone bridge Plakida, the single arched stone bridge of Captain Arkuda, Dilofo village, then in Vitsa and finally back to Monodendri where we will spend the night.
Distance: 9km – Duration: 5-6 hours
We will get transferred to Kapesovo, where we will hike to Vradeto Steps, a stone staircase consists of 1100 steps, spans 1500 m, we will reach the two bridges, named Pera and Dothe, built exclusively for this path. After we cross the bridges, we will go up to Vradeto village.
From Vradeto we will hike to Beloi viewpoint where we will rest and admire the gorgeous view to the Vikos gorge. We will then return to Vradeto for coffee or lunch to a traditional tavern.
We will return to Kapesovo through Vradeto Steps and then to Monodendri.
Distance: 12km – Duration: 6-7 hours
Crossing the Vikos Gorge starting from Monodendri, we first descend towards the the gorge while ascending and descending successively hiking through forested slopes while its giant limestone walls rise around us.
Then we meet the sources of the river Voidomatis with the coldest water in Greece around 9 ºC where we can take a refreshing dip and finally we climb towards the village of Vikos. Overnight in Monodendri.
