6-Day Valia Calda Hiking Tour

The hiking crossing of a part of Valia Kalda and North Pindos, a distance of about 80 to 90 km, is one of the most exciting and impressive crossings of the Greek mountains. Walking through green virgin forests, crossing rivers, alpine landscapes, and encountering springs with crystal waters and traditional villages one can admire a part of wild nature.

Arrival in Metsovo. Metsovo is a lively mountain town in Epirus, with its diverse history, traditions and customs is a popular winter and summer holiday destination.  We check-in at the guest house or hotel, there will be detailed information about the program for the next few days.

Distance: 20km – Time: 7-8 hrs

After having our breakfast in Metsovo, we transfer with a rented vehicle to the Mavrovouni refuge for the start of the hiking tour.

Starting from the refuge, we climb to the peak of Flegga, then we are go the Flegges twin dragon lakes, and then descend to Arkoudorema and end up at the Refuge of Valia Kalda in Vovousa.

Distance: 16km – Time: 5-6 hrs

After taking our breakfast in Vovousa, we start our hiking through Valia Stathis. Valia Stathis is a truly rich ecosystem with streams, springs, pines and deciduous trees. Then we cross the “Stathis” stream and climb to “Skriou” (ladder in Vlach), where we will leave Valia Stathi arriving in the village of Distrato.

Distance: 16km – Time: 5-6 hrs

Today we will hike the magnidicent route from Distrato to Samarina under the peak of Gomara next to the valley of Valia Kirna, with the centuries-old pines, which in Vlach means “Devil’s Valley” well hidden in the northeast side of Smolikas mt. A true monument of nature, an area with high indicators of diversity in terms of flora and fauna. A forest landscape of unique beauty. One of the most isolated wildlife refuges.

Our route is part of the international trail E6 but also part of the hiking route “Pindos Trail” which has been recently maintained and marked.

Distance: 20km – Time: 9-10 hrs

Today is a summit day as we leave Samarina behind, we hike through a dense forest of black pine, rombolo and alpine meadows. Going out to the alpine we can see the impressive peaks of Small and Big Mosia and then we climb to the top of Smolikas with an endless view of Tymfi and Grammos mountains. From the top, we first descend towards Smolikas Dragonlake, a refuge for the alpine triton, and then towards Pades, where we will spend the night.

Smolikas mt, one of the most beloved mountains of hikers, is distinguished by its dense forests, many springs and impressive alpine landscapes with peaks, meadows and beautiful dragon lakes. Smolika’s dragon lake stretches between the great peaks of the second highest mountain in Greece, in an alpine landscape of amazing beauty. The dragon lake of Smolikas is the second largest located at an altitude of 2,160 meters below the highest peak of Smolikas (2,637 m.). Its area ranges from 4 to 6 acres, its perimeter reaches 310 meters, while as you look at it from above, it has the shape of a heart.

After we have our breakfast in Pades, we are heading to Konitsa. In Konitsa ther is a famous bridge which is single-arched stone-built that stands out for its huge arch. In particular, the span of the arch is estimated at 35.60 m, while its height reaches 19.25 m. Its imposing aspect is complemented by the place where it is built. At the entrance of the Aoos river gorge.
