Hike to Gkistova dragonlake

The hike to Gkistova dragon lake on the mountain of Grammos at 2,350m altitude is a first-class opportunity to visit the highest dragon lake in Greece and at the same time to see and observe from a close look a mountain of historical importance for modern Greek history.

Itinerary

Grammousta is a historic Vlach village that in its heyday (17th-18th century) had a population of 15,000. Built at an altitude of 1,380m on the slopes of Grammos, it was a brilliant economic center of the region. Unfortunately, from the time of Ali Pasha until the end of the Greek Civil War, a series of bad events led to its abandonment and complete desolation.

We settle to the guesthouse, we have a briefing for the next day and prepare for dinner

Distance: 12km – Duration: 6 hours

In the alpine meadows of Grammos, at an altitude of 2,350m, there is the alpine lake with the highest altitude in Greece, Gkistova. Hidden in a small alcove between the highest peaks of Grammos, right on the border line, Gkistova maintains its waters all year round and is a rare type of habitat by Greek standards.

We begin from our guesthouse heading to Gkistova dragonlake. As soon as we arrive at the lake we can admire the beautiful landscape, we rest and heading back to the guesthouse for lunch and departure.
