Meteora are located in Kalampaka in Trikala. They have been designated in 1988 by UNESCO as a “Preserved and Protected Monument of Humanity”. It is also a protected habitat of the Natura 2000 network and includes plane and oak forests, riverside valley, forested hills and important fauna.

The monasteries of Meteora are the second monastic complex in Greece after Mount Athos. There are six monasteries in Meteora, these are: the Monastery of Rousanos or Arsani, the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, the Monastery of all Saint or Barlaam, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, the Monastery of Saint Nikolaos and the Monastery of Saint Stefanos.

Meteora is an attraction for climbers from all over the world, as the spectacular rocks make them ideal for climbing. Many climbing schools carry out their training in Meteora.

Apart from climbing, there are also many hiking trails in Meteora. Paths starting from Kalambaka end at the monasteries but also paths from one monastery to another. The routes are made between the rocks and one can enjoy the landscape. Every year the Meteora Trail Run takes part in a 23km and 10km trail race. Also many enjoy the beauty of Meteora by mountain bike.
